In the east of the county is the Upper Sioux Indian Reservation .
geography
The county is located in southwest Minnesota, borders South Dakota to the west and is bounded by the Minnesota River to the east. The Yellow Medicine River flows into this south of Granite Falls .

history
Yellow Medicine County was formed on November 7, 1871 from parts of Redwood County. It was named after the Yellow Medicine River that flows through the county.
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Andrew John Volstead House . Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 31, 2018).
