Chippewa County is located in central southwest Minnesota and is bounded in the southwest by the Minnesota River . history

The Chippewa County was formed on February 20, 1862 from parts of the now defunct Davis County and Pierce County, which only exists in Wisconsin. It was named after the Chippewa River that flows through the county.

Eight structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 28, 2018).
