The Beltrami County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Minnesota . In 2010 , the county had 44,442 residents and a population density of 6.8 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Bemidji , named after the Ojibwe expression bemijigamaag , "lake of the crossing waters".

The county in northern Minnesota, about 50 km south of the border with Canada , is traversed by the upper Mississippi at its northernmost section. About in the middle of the county is the Red Lake , the largest lake completely in Minnesota with 1106 km².
It has an area of 7914 square kilometers, of which 1425 square kilometers are water.

history
Beltrami County was formed on February 28, 1866 from parts of Itasca County, Polk County and Free Territory. It was named after the Italian explorer Giacomo Beltrami , who explored the northern part of Minnesota in search of the source of the Mississippi in 1823 and lived with the Sioux for a few months . The USS Beltrami entered the US Navy service in January 1945 and was named after Beltrami County. The USS Beltrami was deployed in the Pacific during the final months of World War II . Also, the Beltrami County Courthouse , built in 1902, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 for its unique architecture . In addition, another 13 buildings in the city are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 28, 2018).

As of the 2010 census , Beltrami County had 44,442 people in 16,536 households. The population density was 6.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.56 people lived in each of the 16,536 households. The racial the population was composed of 75.4 percent white, 0.7 percent African American, 19.9 percent Native American, 0.8 percent Asian, 0.1 percent Polynesian and other ethnic groups; 3.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race. 25.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.6 percent were between 18 and 64 and 13.2 percent were 65 years or older. 50.0 percent of the population was female. The median income for a household was 43,989 USD . The per capita income was $ 21,753. 19.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
