The Cook County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Minnesota . In 2010 , the county had 5,176 people and a population density of 1.4 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Grand Marais .

geography

The county is in the far northeast of Minnesota. It is bounded to the north by the Pigeon River , which forms the border with Canada . To the southeast, the county is bordered by Lake Superior , one of the five Great Lakes . It has an area of ​​8650 square kilometers, of which 4893 square kilometers are water.

In the extreme northeastern tip of the county is the Grand Portage Indian Reservation of the Anishinabe Indians. Embedded in it is the Grand Portage National Monument , a memorial of the federal government for an important historical traffic route on the Great Lakes and a base for the fur trade in the 18th century.

Cook County was formed on November 3, 1874 from parts of Lake County. It was named after Michael Cook , a major in the American Civil War .

14 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 28, 2018).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , Cook County had 5,176 people in 2,627 households. The population density was 1.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 1.95 people lived in each of the 2,627 households.

The racial the population was composed of 88.1 percent white, 0.5 percent African American, 8.5 percent Native American, 0.6 percent Asian, 0.1 percent Polynesian and other ethnic groups; 2.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.2 percent of the population.

16.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 21.4 percent were 65 years or older. 50.5 percent of the population was female.
