Lutsen is a settlement on community-free area in Cook County in the northeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Minnesota . For statistical purposes, the place has been combined to form a census-designated place (CDP). In 2010 Lutsen had 190 residents.

Lutsen is located on the north bank of the Upper Lake , the westernmost and highest of the Great Lakes . The place is not far from the border with Canada and on the lake across from Wisconsin and Michigan . Lutsen is located at 47 ° 38'50 "north latitude and 90 ° 40'29" west longitude and extends over 27.69 km². The place is the center of the Lutsen Township .

The neighboring towns of Lutsen are Grand Marais (28.6 km northeast along the lake shore) and Hovland (59.9 km northeast along the lake shore).

The closest major cities are Thunder Bay in the Canadian province of Ontario (156 km northeast) and Duluth (149 km southwest). Minneapolis , the largest city of Minnesota, is 396 km southwest.

The mouth of the Pigeon River , which forms the border with Canada, is 94.5 km northeast.
