Minnesota State Route 61 is a 151 mile long trunk road in northeast Minnesota , United States that runs from the junction with Interstate 35 at Duluth (26th Avenue East) to near the border between the United States and Canada Grand Portage runs. In the Canadian province of Ontario , the road from the Pigeon River Bridge continues as Ontario Highway 61 and ends in Thunder Bay .
The route follows the northern shore of Lake Superior , the so-called North Shore, and is part of the Lake Superior Circle Tour , which runs through Minnesota, Ontario, Michigan and Wisconsin . The Grand Portage National Monument is located on State Route 61 at Grand Portage .
Minnesota 61 is one of three State Routes in Minnesota that have a number matching an existing US Highway within that state. The other two are Minnesota State Route 65 and 169 .

The highway runs nearby - and mostly right on the shore - the Lake Superior (Lake Superior) from southwest to northeast through the following places:
Around 33 km between Duluth and Two Harbors have been developed as a four-lane expressway. This officially bears the name Arthur Rohweder Memorial Highway , although the name is not given on the street signs on site, only a small sign on the roadside indicates this.

The highway crosses the Superior National Forest and the Grand Portage State Forest . There are various state parks along the route:
- Gooseberry Falls State Park northeast of Two Harbors in Lake County.
- Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is located in Lake County between Two Harbors and Silver Bay.
- Tettegouche State Park just northeast of Silver Bay on the Baptism River .
- Temperance River State Park is northeast of Schroeder Township in Cook County.
- Cascade River State Park is located between Lutsen Township and Grand Marais in Cook County.
- Judge CR Magney State Park is located on the banks of the Brule River , 12 miles northeast of Grand Marais in Cook County.
- Grand Portage State Park is located in Cook County on both banks of the Pigeon River near Grand Portage.
history
From 1926 to 1991, the highway was a section of US Highway 61 . This inspired the musician Bob Dylan to write his song Highway 61 Revisited . The section between Duluth and the Canadian border was cleared in 1929 and completely paved by 1940.
After the construction of Interstate 35 in the 1960s, US 61 and I-35 overlapped from Duluth to Wyoming , south of Minneapolis. In 1991, the section between Wyoming and the Canadian border was dedicated. The section north of Duluth was from then on as Minnesota State Route 61.
The section between Hovland and the Pigeon River originally ran further inland from the lakeshore and bypassed Grand Portage. The current route and the border crossing were built in the early 1960s.
The expressway between Duluth and Two Harbors was also built in the 1960s. The original route was then transferred to the affected counties in this area. Both counties now run the street in their area as County Road with the original number 61.
