history

Bear River was the first settlement on the northwestern bank of the lake and was founded on June 24, 1856 by members of the German emigrant family Wieland. The approximately 25 family members were dropped off by the paddle steamer Illinois . As a result, they built two sawmills and in 1869 a flour mill.

The panic of 1857 caused a number of settlements on the lake's northwestern shore to be abandoned. Beaver Bay was the only permanently inhabited town between Duluth and Grand Portage at the time .

In 1866 Bear Bay became the county seat of the newly formed Lake County, until it was moved to Two Harbors in 1886 . The school built in 1876 soon burned down and was rebuilt in 1878. A new building completed in 1928 now serves as the seat of the municipal administration.

In the 1890s, settlers of Scandinavian origin began to arrive . These were dedicated to commercial fishing , which flourished on the North Shore until the late 1960s. Agriculture was not as productive as expected and so the settlement lived mainly from logging until the end of the 19th century.

In 1924, State Route 61 was completed, which began tourist development. Today this is an important economic factor for Beaver Bay, especially due to sport fishing for salmon and trout in the Beaver River.
