Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is an 839-acre state park on the shores of Lake Superior in Minnesota . It is best known for the Split Rock Lighthouse, a lighthouse built in 1910 . The park has around 340,000 visitors annually.
The state park is located in the northeast of the state, about 25 kilometers north of Two Harbors . Large areas of the hilly terrain formed by glaciers during the last ice age are forested and offer various hiking and biking trails that are used for cross-country skiing in winter .
There is a campsite in the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. The lighthouse and some surrounding buildings have been restored and designed in the style of the 1920s. The Minnesota Historical Society now operates a museum there. Another attraction is the waterfall on the Split Rock River in the south of the park.
lighthouse
Split Rock Light is a lighthouse in the state park. After numerous ships sank in a storm in November 1905, the United States Lighthouse Service ordered the construction of the lighthouse on the rocky coast. Ralph Russell Tinkham designed the 40 meter high and around 65,000 US dollar tower. It is built hexagonal from brick and is reinforced by an inner steel frame. On July 31, 1910, it started operations. The lighthouse , which was originally powered by petroleum , was replaced in 1940 by a 1,000 watt electric light.
In 1969 the lighthouse ceased operations and was added to the National Register of Historic Places with the surrounding area . In June 2011, it was granted National Historic Landmark status .
