West Cook

West Cook is a non-organized territory ( Unorganized Territory ) in Cook County in the northeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Minnesota . In 2010 the area had 1616 inhabitants.

West Cook lies between the Canadian border to the north and the north shore of Lake Superior . The center of the area lies at 47 ° 58'08 "north latitude and 90 ° 38'46" west longitude and extends over 1717.4 km².

From the land side, the area completely encompasses the urban area of Grand Marais , the administrative seat of Cook County. The closest major cities are Thunder Bay in the Canadian province of Ontario (176 km northeast) and Duluth (189 km southwest). Minneapolis , Minnesota's largest city, is 437 km southwest.

The mouth of the Pigeon River , which forms the border with Canada, is 114 km northeast.

Within the West Cook area, Lake Abita is the highest lake in Minnesota at 624 m.

The Minnesota State Route 61 runs along the shore of Lake Superior. The historic Gunflint Trail , now County Road 12, runs north along the eastern edge of the area. All other roads are subordinate and partly unpaved roads.

The nearest airports are Thunder Bay International Airport, 172 km northeast, and Duluth International Airport , 195 km southwest ; the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is located 444 km south-west.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , the West Cook area had 1,616 people in 744 households. The population density was 0.94 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.16 people lived in each of the 744 households.

The racial the population was composed of 96.5 percent white, 0.2 percent African American, 0.8 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and 0.1 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.1 percent of the population.

17.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 63.1 percent were between 18 and 64 and 19.6 percent were 65 years or older. 47.8 percent of the population was female.
