geography
The county is located in western Minnesota on Lake Traverse , which forms the border with South Dakota . Further north, the county meets the intersection of the states of Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota .
Traverse County covers an area of 1,518 square kilometers, of which 31 square kilometers are water.
In the southwest of the county, the Traverse Gap, as part of the continental divide, separates the catchment area of the Hudson Bay , which is reached via Lake Traverse, the Bois de Sioux River , the Red River of the North , the Winnipeg Lake and the Nelson River , from the Little Minnesota River the Minnesota River and the Mississippi are part of the Gulf of Mexico drainage basin .
Lake Traverse's largest tributary is the Mustinka River , which flows through the north of the county.

The Traverse County was formed on February 20, 1862 from designated as free - but actually populated by Indians - territory. It was named after Lake Traverse, which lies on the western border of the county.
