The county is located in northwest Minnesota on the east bank of the Red River of the North , which forms the border with North Dakota . The Red Lake River flows through the county from east to west and then flows into the Red River. The county has an area of 5,174 square kilometers, of which 71 square kilometers are water. history
Polk County was formed on July 20, 1858 from parts of the defunct Pembina County. It was named after James K. Polk (1795–1849), the eleventh President of the United States (1845–1849).
