The county is located in northwest Minnesota on the east bank of the Red River of the North , which forms the border with North Dakota . Polk County was formed on July 20, 1858 from parts of the defunct Pembina County. It was named after James K. Polk (1795–1849), the eleventh President of the United States (1845–1849).
