geography
The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Minnesota and is approximately 22 miles east of Wisconsin . It has an area of 1170 square kilometers, of which 33 square kilometers are water. The county is traversed by the Rum River , a left tributary of the upper Mississippi . history
Isanti County was formed on February 13, 1857 from parts of Ramsey County . It was named after the Indian word for this area.
