The county is located in northeast Minnesota and borders Wisconsin to the east . It has an area of ​​2267 square kilometers, of which 39 square kilometers are water.

In the northeast, the county is traversed by the Saint Louis River, which flows east of the county boundary at Duluth into Lake Superior , one of the five Great Lakes .

history

Carlton County was formed on May 23, 1857 from parts of Pine County and St. Louis County. It was named, like the district capital, after Rueben B. Carlton , an early settler in the area.

In Moose Lake is the St. Paul Minneapolis and Sault Ste. Marie Depot (also known as Moose Lake Soo Line Depot ). The station building, erected in 1907, has been listed in the NRHP since 1994 . A total of 14 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 28, 2018).
