geography
The county is located in a lake-rich landscape in western Minnesota, around 50 km southeast of the intersection of the states of North Dakota , South Dakota and Minnesota. It has an area of 1490 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water. The county is traversed from north to south by the Pomme de Terre River , a left tributary of the Minnesota River that flows into the Mississippi . history
Stevens County was formed on February 20, 1862 from parts of Pierce County and Indian Land, which only existed in Wisconsin. It was named after Isaac Ingalls Stevens , the first governor of the Washington Territory and Brigadier General of the Union Army during the American Civil War .
