Keweenaw County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Eagle River .

The county is located in the far northwest of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, extends in the northeast of the Keweenaw Peninsula into Lake Superior , one of the five Great Lakes , and has an area of 15,452 square kilometers, of which 14,051 square kilometers are water. It borders Houghton County to the south . In addition to the Keweenaw Peninsula, the Isle Royale, further north, also belongs to Keweenaw County.
history
Keweenaw County was formed in 1861 from parts of Houghton County. It was named after the Indian word gakiiwe-wewaning .
Part of the Keweenaw National Historical Park is in the county. 35 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 30, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Keweenaw County had 2,301 people; 998 households and 604 families were counted. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.0 percent white, 3.5 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 0.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.8 percent of the population.
Of the 998 households, 20.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.6 percent were married couples living together, 5.7 percent were single mothers, and 39.4 percent were non-families. 35.8 percent were single households and 17.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.76 people.
22.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 21.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 29.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 20.3 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 116.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 104.1 men.
The median income for a household in the 28,140 USD , and the median income for a family 36,758 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,165 versus $ 21,667 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,769. 7.4 percent of families and 12.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
