Newaygo County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is White Cloud .

The county is located in the east of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 35 km from Lake Michigan and has an area of ​​2231 square kilometers, of which 49 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lake County , Mecosta County , Montcalm County , Kent County , Muskegon County, and Oceana County .

history

Newaygo County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County and Oceana County. It was named either after an Indian chief or after the Indian word for plenty of water .

According to the 2000 census , Newaygo County had 47,874 people in 17,599 households and 12,935 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer.
