Funkley is a small town ( city ) in Beltrami County in the state of Minnesota in the United States . At the last census in 2010 , Funkley had five residents, making it the smallest city in the state of Minnesota.

Funkley is located in northern Minnesota, around 50 kilometers as the crow flies northeast of the district capital, Bemidji , 330 kilometers northwest of Minneapolis and 105 kilometers south of the border with Canada . Near the city is the South Cormorant River . Funkley covers an area of ​​approximately 1.8 square kilometers, neighboring towns are Northome (14 kilometers northeast) and Blackduck (nine kilometers southwest).

history

Funkley was founded in 1903 by Matt Fisher and on January 14, 1904 incorporated after the route of Minnesota and International Railway was extended there. The place was named after Henry Funkley, who was then District Attorney for Beltrami County. Shortly after it was founded, Funkley received a post office from the United States Postal Service that was in operation until 1967. Since then, the residents of Funkley have been using the post office in Blackduck, which is now also home to the Funkley city administration. In the 1930s, the population peaked at 60. At that time, a sawmill was in operation in Funkley .

Since 1960 the population of Funkley has steadily declined. The United States Census determined a population of five people in the city on April 1, 2010, making Funkley the smallest municipality in the state of Minnesota. Until June 2011, the place shared this status with the city of Tenney , which was eventually dissolved. There is a bar in Funkley that is run by Mayor Emil Erickson.

At the 2010 United States Census, Funkley had five residents, referring to five households. There were no families living in the village at the time of the census. 80% of the residents were white and 20% were of multiple ethnicities.

The median age in Funkley in 2010 was 46.8 years. None of the residents were under 18 or between 18 and 24 years old at the time of the census, 20% were between 25 and 44, 80% between 45 and 65 and none of the residents were older than 65 years. 20% of the population were male and 80% female.

In the United States Census 2000 , Funkley had 15 residents in six households and four families. 100% of the population were white. There were married couples in 66.7% of all households, children under 18 years of age in 33.3% of all households and residents over 65 years of age in 16.7% of all households.

At the time of the census, the median income in Funkley was $ 26,250 per household and $ 25,625 per family. The average per capita income was $ 15,521. None of the residents of Funkley lived below the poverty line .

Funkley is located directly on US Highway 71 to Fort Frances , US Highway 2 is about 48 kilometers southwest of the city.
