Benton County was formed on October 27, 1849 from St. Croix County, which now only exists in Wisconsin. It was named after Thomas Hart Benton , a US Senator from Missouri .

Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , Benton County had 38,451 people in 15,139 households. The population density was 36.3 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.48 people each in the 15,139 households.
The racial the population was composed of 94.7 percent white, 2.1 percent African American, 0.5 percent Native American, 2.1 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
