The Yellow Medicine River is a 173 km long tributary of the Minnesota River in southwest Minnesota in the United States . About the Minnesota River it is part of the catchment area of the Mississippi River and drains an area of 1722 km² in an agricultural region. The name is a translation of an expression from the Dakota -Language for the river, "pajutazee" by which the yellowish root of menispermaceae is meant as climbing plants grow along the river.

The Yellow Medicine River originates from the Lake Shaokatan in Shaokatan Township in western Lincoln County , about 10 km southwest of Ivanhoe , on the Coteau des Prairies , a moraine - plateau through which the river basins of the Mississippi River and Missouri Rivers are separated . It initially flows as a non-continuous stream north-east to Ivanhoe and then leaves the plateau in the north-west of Lincoln County, decreasing 75 m in height within 8 km. It then turns east-northeast on a generally treeless ground moraine plain through north Lyon County and east Yellow Medicine County at Hanley Falls . It empties into the Minnesota River in Upper Sioux Agency State Park in Sioux Agency Township , about eight miles southeast of Granite Falls , after losing 30 m in height over the last 15 km in the Minnesota River valley.

The longest tributaries of the Yellow Medicine River include the 41 miles long North Branch Yellow Medicine River and the South Branch Yellow Medicine River , both of which run largely on the Coteau. The North Branch flows northeast through northern Lincoln County, briefly grazes through Yellow Medicine County, and flows through Porter . The 99 km long South Branch flows northeast through Lincoln County to northwest Lyon County, near Minneota . Other tributaries include the 74 km long Spring Creek , which flows east through Yellow Medicine County, and the 50 km long Mud Creek, which runs east through west of Yellow Medicine County and northwest of Lyon County.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency statistically merges the catchment area of the Yellow Medicine River with that of Hawk Creek on the opposite side of the Minnesota River and several smaller tributaries of the Minnesota River located nearby. According to their information, 81% of the land area within these combined catchment areas is used for agriculture , mainly for the cultivation of maize and soybeans .

Fish species in the Yellow Medicine River include catfish , carp , European pike , eyeglass, and catfish .

Flow rate

The United States Geological Survey has a gauge near Granite Falls, about 6 miles above the mouth. The long-term mean value of the runoff between 1931 and 2005 was 4 m³ / s. The highest recorded value was measured on April 10, 1969 and was 487 m³ / s. The lowest value was zero and occurred during dry spells of several years.
