The area around today's city of Edgarton is on quartzite . In this mineral deposits of catlinite are embedded, which was mined by the plains Indians for the production of the heads of their peace pipes and is partly still today.
In 1876, Alonzo Kingburry , AA Dodge and MM Gunsolus set off land for white people to settle in what is now the city for the first time and settled there in 1877. The Southern Minnesota Railroad reached Edgarton in 1879. As a result, the population of the newly emerging place increased continuously.
