The Bemidji State University is a university in Bemidji , Minnesota . The college with around 5400 students has a campus on Lake Bemidji and is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System .
history
In 1919 the Bemidji State Normal School was founded, which initially trained teachers for elementary schools and later also for high schools . In 1921 it was converted into the Bemidji State Teachers College . In 1957 the college was renamed to Bemidji State College and in 1975 to its current name.
Today it offers 65 undergraduate programs and 14 graduate programs.
Sports
The sports teams are called Beavers and compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference within NCAA Division II . The ice hockey teams that compete in Division I are an exception. The women's team plays in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , the men's team is represented in College Hockey America . The colors are green, black and white, the mascot is called Bucky .
The men's ice hockey team achieved their greatest success in the 2009 playoffs, when they were able to qualify for the first time for the Frozen Four of Division I, the tournament of the top four college teams in the United States. There they were defeated in the semi-finals.
