Phenamidine (trade name Oxopirvedine ad us. Vet) is a drug from the group of benzamidines that is used in veterinary medicine as an antiprotozoic agent against Babesia in the form of phenamidine isethionate (CAS number 620-90-6). Since the active ingredient often triggers allergic reactions , it is usually combined with an antihistamine . Phenamidine isethionate forms white, odorless crystals with a bitter taste.
Phenamidine can be used to treat babesiosis in dogs , babesiosis in horses, and babesiosis in cattle . It is hardly effective against Babesia felis . If the dosage is underdosed, resistance quickly develops .
Unwanted drug effects include swelling at the injection site and possible anaphylactic reactions, vomiting, dizziness, convulsions or liver damage. Such side effects are more common in dogs with kidney and / or liver damage. In horses, necrosis can occur after subcutaneous injection , which is why it should be administered intramuscularly in this species .
