Andrew Murray (born November 6, 1981 in Selkirk , Manitoba ) is a Croatian - Canadian ice hockey player who was last under contract with the KHL Medveščak Zagreb in the Continental Hockey League . He has been eligible to play for the Croatian national ice hockey team since 2015 .

Career

Murray (2nd from right, # 51) during a Columbus Blue Jackets game against the St. Louis Blues .

The 1.88 m center first played from 1999 to 2001 for the Selkirk Steelers in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League . He then spent two seasons at Bemidji State University and went on the ice for their ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , Murray was selected in the eighth round in position 242 by the Columbus Blue Jackets .

The left shooter first played with the Syracuse Crunch , a farm team of the Blue Jackets in the American Hockey League , before he was appointed to the NHL roster of the Columbus franchise on December 27, 2007 . Five days later, the center-forward scored his first goal in the National Hockey League against the Anaheim Ducks . In March 2008, Murray extended his contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets for three years until the end of the 2010/11 season .

After his contract expired, he signed a new one-year contract with the San Jose Sharks as a free agent on July 19, 2011 . On February 6, 2012, the Sharks placed him on the waiver list and then sent him, after no other team had signed him, to the Worcester Sharks , where he played until the end of the season. In June, Murrays NHL negotiating rights changed as part of an exchange deal for Brad Stuart to the Detroit Red Wings , which did not take him under contract. Therefore, the St. Louis Blues were able to sign him a month later, with Murray receiving a two-way contract over a year. Due to the 2012 NHL lockout , Murray was sent to the Blues farm team and subsequently scored 14 goals in 51 AHL games for the Peoria Rivermen . He also came to an NHL assignment after the start of the NHL season in January 2013.

On July 29, 2013 Murray signed his first contract outside North America when he was signed by the KHL Medveščak Zagreb from the KHL . In the 2014/15 season he was also the captain of the team from the Croatian capital.

International

After his naturalization, Murray has been eligible to play for the Croatian national ice hockey team since 2015 . At the 2015 World Cup , he represented the Balkan nation's team for the first time in Division I.
