Bradley William "Brad" Stuart (born November 6, 1979 in Rocky Mountain House , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 1198 games for the San Jose Sharks , Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames between 1995 and 2016 , Los Angeles Kings , Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . In the service of the Detroit Red Wings, Stuart, who had been selected third overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft , won the Stanley Cup in 2008 .

Career

Before starting his professional career, Stuart played with the Regina Pats in the Western Hockey League from 1995 to 1999 . This transferred him during the 1998/99 season to the Calgary Hitmen , with whom Stuart was able to win the championship of the WHL at the end of the season. In addition, the Canadian secured the award for the best defender of the Canadian Hockey League , the amalgamation of the Canadian junior leagues. In the summer of 1999, Stuart was signed by the San Jose Sharks after they had selected him in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in third position in the first round.

For the 1999/00 season , Stuart was in the Sharks' squad and played all 82 games of the season in his first season. He posted a total of 36 points. Stuart also stayed in San Jose for the next four seasons, but was only able to exceed the points from his rookie season once . Stuart did not play during the 2004/05 NHL lockout . He only returned to the ice for the 2005/06 season . After disappointing performances of his person and the rest of the team of the Sharks at the beginning of the season, Stuart, along with Marco Sturm and Wayne Primeau , was given on November 30, 2005 for Joe Thornton in an exchange deal to the Boston Bruins . With a total of 43 points, including twelve goals, Stuart set new personal records in all offensive categories. On February 10, 2007, the Canadian was transferred again. Since his contract expired at the end of the season, and the Bruins did not expect that he would extend his contract, they gave him up together with Wayne Primeau and a draft right to Calgary . In return, Boston received Chuck Kobasew and Andrew Ference . With the Flames he reached the playoffs, but failed in the first round.

In the summer of 2007, Stuart signed a contract with the Los Angeles Kings , but spent a rather unsuccessful time there when the Los Angeles Kings occupied last place in the NHL for a long time. In late February 2008, Stuart was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings by the Kings for a second- and a four-round draft pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft . After nine games in the regular season for Detroit, he was injured and only returned to the squad in the playoffs. In the second line of defense he played together with Niklas Kronwall and both were able to show their skills, especially in the final series against the Pittsburgh Penguins , when they kept the young stars Sidney Crosby and Yevgeny Malkin in check. In addition, Stuart set offensive accents in the final round, prepared four goals in the six games and scored the winning goal himself in the second game. Ultimately, Detroit won the Stanley Cup in the sixth game in the series. A few weeks after the end of the playoffs, the Red Wings extended his contract by four years.

On June 10, 2012, the rights for Stuart were transferred to the San Jose Sharks. In exchange, the Red Wings received the rights to Andrew Murray and a conditional vote for the seventh round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft . Eight days later, it was revealed that Stuart had signed a three-year contract for $ 10.8 million with the Sharks. On October 8, 2013, Stuart was suspended for three games due to a check against Rick Nash .

On July 1, 2014, Stuart was given to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for two entry draft options . In the subsequent 2014/15 season, Stuart completed his 1,000th game in the NHL. In the 2015/16 season he only played six games due to a back injury and subsequent surgery, whereupon Colorado bought him out of his remaining contract year (buy-out) . A little later, the 36-year-old announced his retirement from active sports.

International

On the international stage, Stuart played in a total of three tournaments for the Canadian national team , including one in the junior division. At the U20 Junior World Championship in 1999 he was able to win the silver medal with the team. He also took part in the 2001 and 2006 World Championships .
