Mark Thomas Pavelich (born February 28, 1958 in Eveleth , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player who played 378 games for the Minnesota North Stars , New York Rangers and San Jose Sharks in the course of his active career between 1976 and 1992 of the National Hockey League on the position of the center . Pavelich celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the national team of the United States , with which he won the gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid at the so-called " Miracle on Ice " .
Career
Pavelich, whose parents immigrated to the USA from Croatia , initially played for three years from 1976 to 1979 at the University of Minnesota Duluth . The performance in his last year earned him, in addition to various appointments in all-star teams, an invitation to the US national team , which was supposed to prepare for the upcoming Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid . Pavelich finally made the leap into the team squad, which was composed entirely of college players, and thus took part in the Olympic ice hockey tournament. There, Team USA succeeded in winning over the Soviet national team , the so-called Miracle on Ice , and a few days later over Finland the sensational win of the gold medal.
After the triumph, the striker moved to the Swiss National League B for HC Lugano for the 1980/81 season . However, the undrafted Pavelich could not resist the call of the National Hockey League , and so he signed his first NHL contract with the New York Rangers in June 1981 . There he played a total of five seasons, but was given up in October 1986 to the Minnesota North Stars . Herb Brooks , the coach of the US team at the 1980 Games, had moved him to this change , although Pavelich actually wanted to end his career. Since he was not at home with the North Stars, he returned to Europe during the 1986/87 season and, in addition to a guest appearance in the British league, played for HC Bozen in the Italian Serie A1 . After two seasons he ended his career, but returned to the 1991/92 season again in the NHL, where he ran up in only two games with the newly founded San Jose Sharks . After the brief interlude, he finally ended his career.
