Robert Bruce McClanahan (born January 9, 1958 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player who played for the Buffalo Sabers , Hartford Whalers and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League from 1976 to 1984 has played. He came to great fame as a member of the US national team , which became Olympic champion in 1980 .
Career
Rob McClanahan began his career as a hockey player at the University of Minnesota , which he attended from 1976 to 1979, while he played parallel for their ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . The 1979/80 season he began with Team USA , in whose Olympic preparation he took part. After the Winter Olympics, he made his debut for the Buffalo Sabers , who had already selected him in the third round of the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft as the 49th player. For Buffalo he scored two goals and six assists in a total of 23 games in his rookie year in the National Hockey League . In the 1980/81 season , the winger played mostly for Buffalo in the NHL, but also came to some missions for their farm team Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League .
The 1981/82 season began McClanahan with the Hartford Whalers in the NHL, but also played in parallel for their AHL farm team Binghamton Whalers . On February 2, 1982 he was transferred to the New York Rangers in exchange for a ten-round vote for the 1983 NHL Entry Draft , where he was one of the leading players in the following year and a half. After a weaker start to the 1983/84 season with the Rangers in the NHL, he was given to the Tulsa Oilers from the Central Hockey League . After the season he ended his career prematurely at the age of 26.
International
For the USA McClanahan took part in the 1979 World Cup and the Canada Cup in 1981 . He was also in his country's squad at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , where he and his team won the gold medal.
