Career

As a player

Rich Preston was born in Regina and played there in his youth for the Regina Pats in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). In 1970 he left his home country and attended the University of Denver for four years , where he played for their ice hockey team, the Pioneers , in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In June 1973, the right winger was then selected in the Professional Player Draft of the World Hockey Association (WHA) by the Houston Eros , for whom he subsequently became one of the top performers, so he came in with 79 points in the 1976/77 season 80 games. After four years in Houston, however, the Eros gave him in July 1978 in exchange for financial compensation to the Winnipeg Jets , with which the Canadian promptly won the Avco World Trophy the following year , where he was honored as a WHA Playoff MVP .

After these successes, Preston moved to the 1979/80 season in the National Hockey League (NHL) by joining the Chicago Black Hawks as a free agent . The attacker also established himself as a regular scorer in Chicago, until he was handed over to the New Jersey Devils after five seasons in June 1984, including Don Dietrich and a second-round vote in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft . The Devils in return sent Bob MacMillan and a five-round vote for the same draft to Chicago.

After two years in New Jersey, Preston returned as a free agent to the Chicago Blackhawks, for which he completed another season and then ended his active career.

As a trainer

After a brief hiatus, Preston returned to the Blackhawks for the 1991/92 season and worked as an assistant coach for these four years. After two years as the head coach of his former junior team, the Regina Pats from the Western Hockey League , the Calgary Flames hired him as an assistant coach in 1997 . Preston held this position until 2000 and from 2002 to 2009; in the two seasons in between he was in charge of the San Jose Sharks . The Canadian then returned to the WHL, where he served as head coach and general manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes from 2009 to 2013 . Another two-year hiatus followed, after which the Anaheim Ducks hired him as an assistant coach in October 2015 . He worked there until the 2018/19 season.
