Gaétan Duchesne (born July 11, 1962 in Québec City , Québec ; † April 16, 2007 ibid) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played 1112 games for the Washington Capitals , Nordiques de during his active career between 1979 and 1998 Quebec , Minnesota North Stars , San Jose Sharks and Florida Panthers played in the National Hockey League on the position of left winger . Duchesne later worked as an assistant coach with the Rafales de Québec in the International Hockey League and Remparts de Québec in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . His son Jeremy is also a professional ice hockey player and plays in the position of goalkeeper .
Career
Duchesne first played in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec with the Remparts de Québec . After the Washington Capitals had selected him in the eighth round in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft in 152nd place, he made the jump into the NHL roster of Caps for the 1981/82 season to the surprise of everyone. The Franco-Canadian remained until the end of the 1986/87 season to the team of capital city, before the summer of 1987 in exchange for Dale Hunter and Clint Malarchuk together with Alan Haworth and a first-round pick in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft , with the later Joe Sakic was selected to be transferred to the Nordiques de Québec .
After only two seasons in his hometown, the left winger had to move to the Minnesota North Stars . With the team he reached the final of the Stanley Cup in 1991 , where the Pittsburgh Penguins were defeated in six games.
For the 1993/94 season , the North Stars left Minnesota and moved to Dallas . Since the Dallas Stars no longer had a use for Duchesne with a new game philosophy, they gave him to the San Jose Sharks , who sent him to the Florida Panthers after a year and a half . After only 13 games in the already shortened 1994/95 season with the Panthers, he ended his NHL career and moved back to his hometown Quebec. There he ran in the International Hockey League as a player and assistant coach for the Rafales de Québec . After the 1997/98 season he ended his career as a player.
He then worked in his hometown from 2000 to 2002 as an assistant coach at the Remparts de Québec, where he had already played as a junior.
Duchesne died surprisingly on April 16, 2007 at the age of 44 while exercising, presumably of cardiac arrest . In 1,028 NHL games, he scored 179 goals and prepared another 254.
