Brent Lindsay Gilchrist (born April 3, 1967 in Moose Jaw , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 882 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , Edmonton Oilers , Minnesota North Stars , Dallas Stars in the course of his active career between 1983 and 2003 , Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . Gilchrist celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Detroit Red Wings by winning the Stanley Cup in 1998 .
Career
Brent Gilchrist began his career as a hockey player in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League , in which he was active from 1983 to 1987 for the Kelowna Wings and Spokane Chiefs . During this period he was selected in the fourth round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft as a total of 79th player by the Canadiens de Montréal , for whose farm team , the Sherbrooke Canadiens from the American Hockey League , he played for the first time towards the end of the 1986/87 season. After he was allowed to play exclusively for Sherbrooke in the AHL in the following season, the winger made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1988/89 season . In his rookie year he came to 58 games, in which he scored nine goals and gave 17 assists. He also played nine games in the AHL for Sherbrooke, for which he was the last time in his career.
From 1989 to 1992 Gilchrist always had a regular place in the NHL team of the Canadiens, before he was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers together with Shayne Corson and Vladimír Vůjtek in exchange for Vincent Damphousse and a four-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft in 1993 . In Edmonton, however, he did not even spend a whole year and was given to the Minnesota North Stars on March 5, 1993 . For his new club, he was on the ice a total of eight times by the end of the season and provided one assist. Then the franchise was relocated and the left shooter played for four years for Minnesota's successor Dallas Stars .
On August 1, 1997 Gilchrist signed a contract as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings , with which he was able to win the prestigious Stanley Cup straight away in the 1997/98 season . He contributed to this success with 30 scorer points, including 15 goals, in a total of 76 games. Following this success, he was selected on October 5, 1998 in the NHL Waiver Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning , but transferred back on the same day. In the following two years the Canadian suffered from the consequences of a hernia and could only appear sporadically in the NHL. He then did not find his way back to his old form and was signed in February 2002 by his ex-club Dallas Stars. The 2002/03 season he began with the Nashville Predators , but had to end his career early at the age of 36 due to a serious back injury he received in a game against his ex-club Edmonton Oilers.
