Glenn M. Healy (born August 23, 1962 in Pickering , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and official who played 474 games for the Los Angeles Kings , New York Islanders , New York between 1981 and 2001 Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League . With the New York Rangers Healy celebrated the greatest success of his career in the form of winning the Stanley Cup in 1994. After retiring, Healy was with the National Hockey League Players' Association until 2009 and has been Executive Director of the NHL Alumni Association since June 2017 .

Career

Healy first spent his junior years from 1979 to 1981 in his hometown with the Pickering Panthers in the Metro Junior A Hockey League , from where he moved to Western Michigan University in the summer of 1981 . There he spent the next four years studying and playing for the university ice hockey team. During his four years there, he developed into one of the most successful goalkeepers in university history, but went unnoticed in the NHL Entry Draft despite numerous individual awards .

Nevertheless, Healy was signed as a free agent by the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League in the summer of 1985 . There he came in the course of the 1985/86 season mainly for the farm team New Haven Nighthawks in the American Hockey League to use. He played other games for the Toledo Goaldiggers in the International Hockey League . He also made his debut for the Kings in the NHL. After he had spent the following game year completely in New Haven, he received the post behind goalkeeper Roland Melanson for the 1987/88 season . He inherited this for the following season and played 48 games.

Since Healy's contract expired at the end of the season and he was in great demand after his breakthrough, he joined the New York Islanders as a free agent in the summer of 1989 , where he shared the position of starter mostly with Mark Fitzpatrick for the next four years . His time with the Islanders finally ended in June 1993 by the NHL Expansion Draft , in which he was not protected by the Islanders. First he was selected in the first part of the draft by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , who lost him to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second draft phase . This in turn transferred him to the New York Rangers in exchange for a third-round vote in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft . As a substitute for Mike Richter , Healy celebrated the greatest success of his career there by winning the Stanley Cup at the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1994 . This was followed by another three years in Manhattan before he moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent in the summer of 1997 . In their service he ended his active career after the 2000/01 season .

After retiring from his career, Healy worked as a commentator for CBC and TSN television networks before being named Director of Player Affairs for the National Hockey League Players' Association in June 2008 . He held this post until his resignation in September 2009 after the dismissal of managing director Paul Kelly in order to return to work for television. He has been Executive Director of the NHL Alumni Association since June 2017 .
