Career
Beginnings
Joe Reekie was born in the province of British Columbia, but began his junior career in Ontario , where he worked for the Nepean Raiders and the Pembroke Lumber Kings , among others . After he was selected in 1982 in the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 143rd position by the North Bay Centennials , he ran from then on in this highest junior division in the region. After his first OHL season, considered him Hartford Whalers in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft at the 124th place before him the Centennial in October 1983 within the league in exchange for Scott Birnie to the Cornwall Royals duties. In Cornwall, the defender increased his personal statistics in the 1984/85 season significantly to 82 scorer points from 65 games, so that he was selected again in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabers in 119th position, as he was not previously under contract with the Hartford Whalers had taken.
Then Reekie moved to the organization of the Sabers, where he was never able to establish himself in the National Hockey League (NHL) over the next four seasons . For the time being, he was mainly used by their farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League (AHL), before he missed large parts of the 1987/88 and 1988/89 seasons due to a knee injury.
NHL
Eventually, the Sabers transferred him to the New York Islanders in June 1989 in exchange for a six- round suffrage in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft . At the Isles , the defender was only sporadically sent to the farm teams and received more time in the NHL, before the newly formed Tampa Bay Lightning signed him in the 1992 NHL Expansion Draft . After one and a half years in Florida, the Lightning sent him to the Washington Capitals in March 1994 and received in return Enrico Ciccone , a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 1994 and another conditional draft vote. The Canadian spent most of his career with the Capitals, completing over 500 games for the team in the next eight years. The greatest success of this time marked the achievement of the Stanley Cup final in 1998 , in which the team was clearly defeated by the Detroit Red Wings 4-0.
In January 2002, the Capitals gave him in exchange for a four-round vote in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft to the Chicago Blackhawks , where Reekie ended the season and subsequently his active career. He had played a total of 953 NHL games and achieved 171 points as a classic defensive defender. After the end of his career, he was temporarily involved as a TV expert on broadcasts of the Capitals at Comcast SportsNet .
