Mariusz Krzysztof Czerkawski (born April 13, 1972 in Radomsko ) is a former Polish ice hockey player who played 787 games for the Boston Bruins , Edmonton Oilers , New York Islanders , Canadiens de Montréal and Toronto Maple in the course of his active career between 1990 and 2009 Leafs in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger . He also played in numerous European clubs and represented the Polish national team in several international tournaments. Czerkawski was the first Polish-born and trained player to play in the NHL.
Career
Mariusz Czerkawski began his career as an ice hockey player with GKS Tychy , for which he made his debut in the Polish Ekstraliga in the 1990/91 season . He was then selected in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round as a total of 106th player by the Boston Bruins . First, however, he stayed in Europe, where he played for a year in Sweden for Djurgårdens IF , with whom he was runner-up in 1992, in the Elitserien and the second division Hammarby IF , before returning to Djurgårdens IF for the 1993/94 season . However, he ended the season with the Boston Bruins, for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League on April 9, 1994 , making him the first Pole who had ever played a game in the NHL. The 1994/95 season , which was shortened due to a lockout , began in the Finnish SM-liiga at Kiekko-Espoo .
During the 1995/96 season , Czerkawski moved within the NHL to the Edmonton Oilers . Here he stayed for a season and a half before being handed over to the New York Islanders . The Islanders, he was in the next five years leading player and took, among others, in 2000 at the NHL All-Star Game in part. In the Canadiens de Montréal he could not prevail in the 2002/03 season and was given by these for a large part of the season to their farm team Hamilton Bulldogs from the American Hockey League , which is why he returned to the 2003/04 season to the Islanders. He spent the 2004/05 lockout season back in Sweden at his ex-club Djurgårdens IF. In the 2005/06 season he tried again in the NHL and initially played for the Toronto Maple Leafs , then moved back to his first NHL team, the Boston Bruins.
From 2006 to 2008 Czerkawski was under contract with the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in the Swiss National League A , where he was also able to convince with 107 points scorer in a total of 104 games. He spent the 2008/09 season at his first professional club, GKS Tychy, in Poland, with whom he won the national cup competition before retiring from the season at the age of 37.
International
For Poland , Czerkawski took part in the junior division at the U18 European Junior Championship in 1990 , the U20 Junior World Championship in 1990 and the U20 Junior B World Championship in 1991 . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the B World Championships in 1991 , 1998 , 2000 and 2006 as well as the A World Championships in 1992 and 2002 . He also represented Poland at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville and in qualifying for the 2006 Winter Olympics .

Czerkawski was married to actress Izabella Scorupco from 1996 to 1998 . He has a daughter with her who was born in 1997.
