Career

Ronning was selected in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues in the seventh round in the 134th place overall after he had attracted attention in his two seasons in the Western Hockey League . In 1984 he had won the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy for the best newcomer to the league and the following year the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy for the most valuable player in the league.

Ronning managed in the course of the playoffs of the 1985/86 season , which he had mostly spent with the Canadian national team , the jump into the squad of the Blues, where he could recommend himself for further assignments. He stayed there until the 1990/91 season , only interrupted by a one-year detour to HC Asiago in the Italian Serie A in the 1989/90 season. On March 5, 1991, the Blues transferred Ronning, Geoff Courtnall , Robert Dirk , Sergio Momesso and a five-round pick to the Vancouver Canucks for Garth Butcher and Dan Quinn . At the Canucks, he reached his full potential, so that he played his best NHL season in the 1992/93 season with 29 goals and 85 points. The following year he reached the final of the Stanley Cup with the Western Canadians , where the team was subject to the New York Rangers . On July 1, 1996 he moved as a free agent to the Phoenix Coyotes , where he only played for two seasons, since the Coyotes transferred him to the Nashville Predators on October 31, 1998 , who had just been admitted to the NHL. Ronning was the Predators' top scorer for several seasons. He held the franchise record for most goals until the 2005/06 season . On March 16, 2002, the Predators transferred Ronning for Jere Karalahti and a four-round pick to the Los Angeles Kings . The center played only 14 season games for the Kings, because on June 22, 2002 Ronning was transferred to the Minnesota Wild , where he completed the 2002/03 season . After becoming a free agent again before the 2003/04 game year , he left his future open for a long time. On January 9, 2004, he finally signed a one-year contract with the New York Islanders . This season would also be his last in the NHL. On February 15, 2006, he announced his retirement from competitive sports.
