Todd Andrew Krygier (born October 12, 1965 in Chicago Heights , Illinois ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach who played 591 games for the Hartford Whalers , Washington Capitals and Mighty during his playing career between 1984 and 2000 Ducks of Anaheim in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the position of left winger . Since the season 2019/20 Krygier is an assistant coach with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League active (AHL).
Career
Krygier spent his junior years between 1984 and 1988 at the University of Connecticut , where he took part in the game operations of Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) parallel to his studies with the ice hockey team. In the four years, the winger increased from initially 27 scorer points over 56 and 48 in the following two years to finally 71 points, which he had collected in just 27 missions. After completing his last college season, he played his first professional games for the New Haven Nighthawks in the American Hockey League (AHL) in the spring of 1988 . He was then selected in the NHL Supplemental Draft in 1988 in the first round in 16th position by the Hartford Whalers from the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Hartford Whalers used the rookie in the 1988/89 season in their AHL farm team , the Binghamton Whalers . There Krygier knew how to convince with 68 points in 76 missions, so that he was a regular for Hartford at the beginning of the following season. In the seasons 1989/90 and 1990/91 he collected 30 points each. Shortly before the start of the 1991/92 season , however, the attacker left the team, as he was given in exchange for a four-round vote in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft to the Washington Capitals . Krygier ran for the franchise from the US capital in the following three years and confirmed his previously shown achievements in Hartford. In February 1995 there was another change, with which the striker began the NHL season 1994/95 , which started later due to the lockout , with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . These had earned him a four-round vote in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft . However, the Caps got their ex-player back at the end of the following season in March 1996 in exchange for Mike Torchia . Ultimately, Krygier stayed there until the spring of 1998 after he had reached the final series of the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in the course of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1998 .
He then ended his NHL career, since he joined the Orlando Solar Bears from the International Hockey League (IHL) as a free agent in the summer of 1998 . After two years in the IHL, he ended his active career at the age of 34. This was followed by a hiatus of several years before Krygier returned to the ice hockey business in the summer of 2006 and supervised the high school team at Novi High School in the US state of Michigan for seven years . He was then head coach of the Muskegon Lumberjacks from the junior league United States Hockey League (USHL) for three years between 2013 and 2016 . He was also employed as an assistant coach for the ice hockey team at Western Michigan University in the NCAA between 2016 and 2019 . Since the beginning of the 2019/20 season , Krygier has been assistant coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins from the AHL, where he works under head coach Ben Simon .
International
For his home country Krygier ran between 1991 and 1997 in a total of three world championship tournaments. His first appearances in the jersey of the national team of the United States he had at the World Cup in Finland in 1991 , where he finished fourth with the team, just outside the medal ranks. With eight scorer points in ten tournament appearances, the offensive player played a major role in the good performance of the Americans. In the following year in the 1992 world championships in Czechoslovakia , Krygier only joined the team during the tournament and only played a single game due to the quarter-finals.
After a five-year break, he played at the 1997 World Cup , which was again held in Finland, his last eight of a total of 19 World Cup games. In the final standings, the US boys took sixth place.
