David George John Ellett (born March 30, 1964 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Winnipeg Jets , Toronto Maple Leafs , New Jersey Devils , Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues in National Hockey League played in the position of defender . His father, Bob Ellett, was also a professional ice hockey player and was active in the American Hockey League for the Cleveland Barons and Rochester Americans .

Career

David Ellett began his career in 1981 with the Ottawa Jr. Senators in the Central Junior A Hockey League , before joining the Bowling Green State University ice hockey team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in 1982 . In a total of 83 games he reached 71 points and received 130 penalty minutes. Ellett was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the fourth round of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft in a total of 75th position. In the 1984/85 season he ran in 88 NHL games for the Jets and collected 44 points scorer. In the play-offs, the Calgary Flames were defeated in the first round , before being eliminated from the competition in the second round in four games against the Edmonton Oilers around the in-form Wayne Gretzky , Jari Kurri and Paul Coffey . Two years later, Ellett met the Jets again in the second playoff round to the Oilers and again lost the series in four games without a single win. In the 1987/88 season , the defensive player set up his career records with 61 points and 116 penalty minutes. In the playoffs Ellett failed with the Jets again against the Edmonton Oilers, who won their fourth Stanley Cup within five years.

After he also counted to the regular squad of the team in the following two years, they gave him on November 10, 1990 in a barter deal with Paul Fenton in exchange for Ed Olczyk and Mark Osborne to the Toronto Maple Leafs . At the Leafs, the Canadian again played an important role and was a regular for the next six years. After he did not qualify for the playoffs with the Toronto- based team in the first two seasons, he advanced in the 1992/93 season with the Leafs to the Conference Finals. In the hard-fought series, the team lost 4-5 against the Los Angeles Kings in game seven and failed to make it into the final games of the Stanley Cup. A year later, Ellett and the team lost in the Conference Finals, this time in five games against the Vancouver Canucks .

On February 25, 1997, the defender became part of a barter between the Maple Leafs and the New Jersey Devils . Along with Doug Gilmour and a third-round suffrage, he moved to the Devils in exchange for Jason Smith , Steve Sullivan and Alyn McCauley . The Canadian went on the ice in 30 games for the Devils and scored ten points. In the summer of 1997 this let his contract expire, whereupon Ellett signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins . The experienced defender was also one of the regulars in Boston and completed 150 NHL games for the Bruins, in which he achieved 30 points scorer. After the 1998/99 season , however, his contract was not extended and he then decided to join the St. Louis Blues team. There he spent another season, on September 8, 2000, he announced his career end after 1245 NHL games.

Although he was born in the United States and was named to the US squad to host the Canada Cup in 1987 , he never played an international game for the US national ice hockey team . Although two years later the then head coach of the US selection Bob Johnson insisted that Ellett had to play for the USA, he still decided on the Canadian selection . At the ice hockey world championship in 1989 he completed his first and only tournament with the Canadians. In ten games he got four hits and a total of six scorer points, he also received 14 penalty minutes. The team finished the tournament in second place, the world championship was won by the USSR.

David Ellett has co- owned the New Mexico Scorpions Central Hockey League team with Brian Savage since 2006 .
