Kevin Haller (born December 5, 1970 in Trochu , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 706 games for the Buffalo Sabers , Canadiens de Montréal , Philadelphia Flyers , Hartford Whalers , Carolina Hurricanes during his active career between 1989 and 2001 , Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Haller celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Canadiens de Montréal by winning the Stanley Cup in 1993 .
Career
Kevin Haller began his career as a hockey player with the Regina Pats , where he was active from 1987 to 1990 in the Canadian Western Hockey League . During the NHL Entry Draft 1989 he was selected in the first round in 14th position by the Buffalo Sabers . After the defender had played a year with the Regina Pats and a year with the Rochester Americans - the then farm team of the Buffalo Sabers - he was accepted into the professional squad of the Buffalo Sabers in the 1990/91 season . He played 21 games in the National Hockey League , in which he scored nine points. Shortly before the trade deadline of the 1991/92 season , the defender was transferred to the Canadiens de Montréal in exchange for Petr Svoboda .
In the following two years he was part of the Canadiens' permanent staff and completed 73 and 68 games in the NHL in the 1992/93 and 1993/94 seasons, respectively. He also won the prestigious Stanley Cup with the team in 1993 . The management of the Canadiens gave him after the end of the season in June 1994 in exchange for Yves Racine to the Philadelphia Flyers . Kevin Haller played for the Flyers for around two and a half years, during which his team made it into the play-offs twice. After he played only 36 games there in the first season, he ran in 69 games for the Flyers in the 1995/96 season . In the following season he completed 27 more games with the Flyers before he was sent to the Hartford Whalers . With the Whalers he made 35 appearances and achieved a total of eight scorer points before the team was relocated and changed its name to Carolina Hurricanes .
In the Hurricanes, the defender played 65 games and scored eight points. At the beginning of the 1998/99 season , the Hurricanes gave the left-handed shooter together with Stu Grimson in exchange for Dave Karpa to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . Haller was able to establish himself at the Ducks and was part of the regular squad for the next two years. He played a total of 153 games in which he scored 15 points for the Californians. At the end of the 1999/2000 season he received no new contract from the Ducks and initially remained without a club. He found a new employer in July 2000 when he was signed to the New York Islanders . The Canadian played for the Islanders for two years and let his career end there. For the Islanders he only played 31 NHL games, as he was often out in the last two years of his career due to several injuries. After the end of the 2001/02 game year, he ended his active career.
International
Haller represented his home country Canada at the 1990 World Junior Championship and won the gold medal with the team. He himself recorded four scorer points and eight penalty minutes in seven tournament games. It was the only international tournament he took part in in his career.
