Edward Steven Phillip "Eddie" Shack (born February 11, 1937 in Sudbury , Ontario , † July 25, 2020 in Toronto , Ontario) was a Canadian ice hockey player . The left winger denied 1958-1975 over 1000 games for six franchises of the National Hockey League (NHL). He spent most of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs , with whom he won the Stanley Cup four times in the 1960s .
Career
Eddie Shack began his career as a hockey player with the Guelph Biltmores , for which he was active from 1952 to 1957 in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA). He then made his debut in professional ice hockey in the 1957/58 season when he scored a total of 34 scorer points, including 16 goals, in 35 games for the Providence Reds from the American Hockey League (AHL). Subsequently, the attacker received a contract with the New York Rangers , for which he played the following two years in the National Hockey League (NHL). On February 5, 1960, the Rangers Shack wanted to transfer to the Detroit Red Wings together with Bill Gadsby in exchange for Red Kelly and Billy McNeill . Since the two Red Wings players did not agree to the transfer, Shack was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs two days later in exchange for Pat Hannigan and Johnny Wilson , with whom the left-shooter won the prestigious Stanley Cup four times in the following seven seasons ( 1962 , 1963 , 1964 and 1967 ).
In May 1967 Shack moved to the Boston Bruins , for which he was the following two NHL seasons on the ice. The Canadian also played for the Los Angeles Kings , Buffalo Sabers and Pittsburgh Penguins until 1973 , before he was bought by his ex-club Toronto Maple Leafs on July 3, 1973. With the team from Ontario he reached the playoffs again in the 1974/75 season, in which he scored one goal in four games. In the following season he was only used sporadically with the Leafs, so he moved to the Oklahoma City Blazers from the Central Hockey League . After a year in which Shack paused, he finished his career in 1977 with the Whitby Warriors of the Ontario Hockey Association.
Eddie Shack died on July 25, 2020 at the age of 83 in a Toronto hospital of complications from cancer .
