John Howard Scott (born September 26, 1982 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The left winger played 290 games in the National Hockey League between 2006 and 2016 , most of them for the Minnesota Wild , Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabers . Special attention was paid to the Enforcer around its election to the 2016 NHL All-Star Game .
Career
John Scott began his career as a hockey player with the Chicago Freeze, for which he was active in the 2001/02 season in the US Junior League North American Hockey League . Then the trained defender played for four years for the team of Michigan Technological University before he received a contract with the Houston Eros from the American Hockey League on September 26, 2006 as a free agent . For this he made his debut in professional ice hockey in the 2006/07 season , scoring a goal in 65 games and giving five assists. In December 2006 he was signed by Houston's partner, Minnesota Wild .
After Scott in the 2007/08 season again came exclusively in the AHL for the Eros used, which links shooter ran in the 2008-09 season for the first time in the National Hockey League on the Minnesota Wild. He gave a template in 20 games. For the 2009/10 season Scott was appointed to the Minnesota NHL squad, where he occupied a regular position in defense.
On February 27, 2012, the Chicago Blackhawks , who had signed the defender as a free agent in July 2010, transferred him to the New York Rangers in exchange for a five-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft . On July 1, 2012, he signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Sabers as a free agent .
After two years, his contract in Buffalo was not renewed, so he signed a one-year contract with the San Jose Sharks in July 2014 . He then joined the Arizona Coyotes , also with a one-year contract.
NHL All-Star Game 2016
In January 2016, Scott was surprisingly voted team captain at the 61st National Hockey League All-Star Game in a fan vote . The choice of Scott was based on several successful fan campaigns in social networks and was viewed by the media as a joke or mockery of the management of the NHL. Scott himself, who as a classic enforcer in the past seven years and 285 NHL games had 11 points and 542 penalty minutes, said he did not want to be elected to the All-Star team because he did not deserve it; however, he accepted the election (as previously announced). There were similar actions in 2007 for Rory Fitzpatrick and in the previous year for Zemgus Girgensons , although then, as after the election, Scott's fears were voiced that the NHL could completely abolish fan voting.
Less than two weeks after his election, Scott was - just as surprisingly - transferred to the Canadiens de Montréal as part of a larger swap within the league , in which the Coyotes surrendered Victor Bartley as well as Scott and received Jarred Tinordi and Stefan Fournier in return . Scott moved from the Pacific to the Atlantic Division and was also transferred to the roster of their farm team, the St. John's IceCaps , by the Canadiens , so it was obvious that Scott should be excluded from the All-Star Game in this way. These rumors were reinforced when a few hours later it became known from inside circles that both the NHL and the Coyotes allegedly tried to get Scott to decline and Scott refused; It was also reported that the Canadiens did not want to sign the winger and instead the Coyotes insisted on including him in the move. The result was a shit storm in the social networks, as a result of which the NHL announced four days after the change that Scott would still lead the Pacific Division as captain.
As expected, Scott became a crowd favorite on the All-Star Weekend, scored two goals in the semi-finals and was voted the Most Valuable Player ("MVP") of the All-Star Game by the fans . His helmet, worn during the Games, is to be included in the Museum of the Hockey Hall of Fame . After Scott was elected MVP, the NHL changed its rules so that injured players or players from minor league teams were no longer allowed to participate in All-Star games.
After the 2015/16 season, the rest of which he had spent in the AHL except for an NHL assignment for the Canadiens at St. John's IceCaps, he announced the end of his playing career. In December 2016 his autobiography " A Guy Like Me: Fighting to Make the Cut " was published.
