Paul MacDermid (born April 14, 1963 in Chesley , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The right winger played over 700 games for the Hartford Whalers , Winnipeg Jets , Washington Capitals and Nordiques de Québec in the National Hockey League between 1982 and 1995 .
Career
Beginnings in Hartford
Paul MacDermid played in his youth for the Windsor Spitfires in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the highest junior league in his home province. In the 1981 NHL Entry Draft , the Hartford Whalers selected him in 61st position, but the winger continued to run for the time being in Windsor, where he increased his personal statistics to an average of over 1.0 per game. In March 1981 he made his debut for the Whalers in the National Hockey League (NHL) and subsequently recorded three appearances in the highest league in North America. These were only to be followed by seven more in the following season, as he returned to the Spitfires for a final year. The Canadian then moved permanently to the organization of the Whalers, but initially mainly for their farm team , the Binghamton Whalers , in the American Hockey League (AHL).
In the middle of the 1984/85 season, MacDermid finally established himself in the Whalers' NHL squad and achieved the best offensive statistics of his career in 1988/89 with 44 points from 74 games. After almost eight years in Hartford, he was given to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Randy Cunneyworth in December 1989 , at which point only five players had completed more regular season appearances for the team than MacDermid (373).
Constant changes and end of career
In Winnipeg, the attacker tied to previous performances with 36 points in the 1990/91 season before the Jets transferred him to the Washington Capitals for Mike Lalor in March 1992 . There he was only active for a little more than a year and was finally sent in June 1993 with Reggie Savage to the Nordiques de Québec , which in return gave Mike Hough to the Capitals. In the Nordiques jersey, he suffered a back injury in November 1993, due to which his playing times were significantly reduced and he had to end his career early after the 1994/95 season. In total, MacDermid had played 733 NHL games and scored 274 points scorer.
In the summer of 2000, MacDermid was part of a group of investors who bought the Owen Sound Platers from the OHL. They renamed the junior team Owen Sound Attack , and he has been a member of the club's management ever since.
