Derrick Smith (* 22. January 1965 in Scarborough , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career 1981-1999 among other 619 games for the Philadelphia Flyers , Minnesota North Stars and Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League on has contested the position of the left winger .

Career

Smith, who spent a season with the Wexford Raiders in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hovkey League between 1981 and 1982 , played between 1982 and 1984 for the Peterborough Petes in the senior junior Ontario Hockey League . During his time there, the left winger was selected in the third round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft in 44th place by the Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League . For the Petes, he completed 148 games over a period of two years.

For the 1984/85 season , the attacker switched to the professional field and was an integral part of the NHL squad of the Philadelphia Flyers for the following seven years of play until the summer of 1991. His performances were exposed to great fluctuations. After setting a personal best with 39 points scorer in his rookie year , he scored only twelve points the following year. This was followed by three seasons with 24 or more points, before it was only nine again in the 1989/90 season . In October 1991 he was finally selected on the waiver list by the Minnesota North Stars , who thus took over the Canadian's contract. After two years with the team from his home state, he moved to Dallas , Texas, in the summer of 1993 , where the franchise continued to operate under the name Dallas Stars .

For the stars themselves, Smith completed only one game in the 1993/94 season . Instead, he was mainly used in the Kalamazoo Wings farm team in the International Hockey League until 1995 , where he had already played more minutes during his time with the North Stars. With the beginning of the 1995/96 season , the Kalamazoo Wings played under the name Michigan K-Wings . Smith stayed with the team until the summer of 1998. In 1994 he was appointed to the IHL Second All-Star Team. His last games as a professional he completed in the course of the 1998/99 season for the Baton Rouge Kingfish in the East Coast Hockey League , where he had signed a contract as a free agent in March 1999 . After six missions, he ended his active career at the age of 34.
