Michael Bryant "Mike" Eagles (born March 7, 1963 in Sussex , New Brunswick ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 897 games for the Nordiques de Québec , Chicago Blackhawks , Winnipeg Jets and during his active career between 1980 and 2000 Washington Capitals has played in the National Hockey League on the left winger position .
Career
Eagles first spent his junior years between 1979 and 1980 with the Melville Millionaires in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and also played a handful of games for the Billings Bighorns in the Western Hockey League that season . After being selected in the OHL Priority Selection in the summer of 1980, the striker played for the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League at the beginning of the 1980/81 season . There he spent a very successful time in the following three seasons. With the roster of Rangers riddled with Al MacInnis , Scott Stevens and Brian Bellows , Eagles won the J. Ross Robertson Cup , the OHL championship trophy, in 1981 and 1982 . The team also won in 1982 in the Memorial Cup after it had failed in the previous year in the final. In addition, the attacker was selected in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round in 116th place by the Nordiques de Québec from the National Hockey League .
After Eagles made his debut for the Nordiques in the NHL at the end of the 1982/83 season , he was at the beginning of the 1983/84 game year for the following two years in the squad of the Fredericton Express , Québec's farm team from the American Hockey League . Also because he had missed large parts of the 1984/85 season due to a wrist injury, the now 22-year-old was only firmly in the Nordiques' NHL squad for the 1985/86 season and spent the following three years there until July 1988 before joining the Barter for Bob Mason was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks . In the service of the Chicago Blackhawks, the Canadian did not succeed in the period up to December 1990 to assert himself permanently in the NHL and repeatedly spent time with the Indianapolis Ice in the International Hockey League , which cooperated with the Blackhawks.
In December 1990 there was another club change via transfer. In return for a four-round suffrage in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft , Eagles moved to the Winnipeg Jets for which he ran up four and a half years until April 1995 in the NHL and was mostly entrusted with the duties of a defensive striker. In April 1995 he finally moved to the Washington Capitals together with Igor Ulanow . As compensation, the capital city club gave a third and five-round vote in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft to the Winnipeg Jets. Eagles spent another five playing years in Washington before he declared his active career ended in the summer of 2000 at the age of 37.
As a result, Eagles took over the 2002/03 season the post of head coach at St. Thomas University in his home province of New Brunswick . He looked after the team playing in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport for a total of nine years until the end of the 2010/11 season.
International
For his home country, Eagles took part in the 1983 Junior World Championship in Switzerland . He was able to achieve six scorer points in seven tournament games, making him fourth-best scorer of all Canadian players. The team took third place at the end of the world title bouts.
