During his career, he played 408 games for the Calgary Flames and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League .

Career

Richard Kromm began his career as a hockey player with the Portland Winter Hawks , for whom he played in the Western Hockey League from 1981 to 1983 . During this time he was selected during the NHL Entry Draft 1982 in the second round as a total of 37th player by the Calgary Flames . The attacker was active with the Flames for three years before he was given to the New York Islanders on March 11, 1986 together with Steve Konroyd in exchange for John Tonelli .

For three years Kromm played for both the Islanders and their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Springfield Indians . After he began the 1989/90 season in the AHL squad of the Indians, the attacker moved to Leksands IF in the Swedish Elitserien for the rest of the season .

After the year in Europe, Kromm signed for another three years with the Islanders, in which, however, he was only used in eight games for the NHL team. In the remaining games he was on the ice for their then AHL farm team, the Capital District Islanders .

In 1993, right after finishing his career as an active player, Kromm was assistant coach with the Cincinnati Cyclones from the International Hockey League , where he remained in this position until 1995. During the 1993/94 season he was also allowed to complete two games as interim coach of the Cyclones. From 1995 to 1997 Kromm coached the Carolina Monarchs from the American Hockey League as head coach. He then became assistant coach for the Chicago Wolves from the International Hockey League in the 1997/98 season . In his three years with Muskegon Fury from the United Hockey League from 1998 to 2001, he won the 1999 championship as a coach.

From 2002 to 2004, the American coached the Calgary Hitmen from the Western Hockey League . In the 2007-08 season, Kromm was the head coach of Calgary's league rivals, his ex-club Portland Winter Hawks . After only eleven wins in 72 games, he was removed from office with the Winter Hawks at the end of the season. For the 2009/10 season he was entrusted with the management of the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the International Hockey League , which he led to 51 wins in 76 regular season games . In August 2010, Kromm took over the duties of head coach and general manager at the Evansville IceMen .

In July 2013, he was hired by the Stockton Thunder as head coach.
