Brian Patrick Mullen (born March 16, 1962 in Hell's Kitchen , New York ) is a retired American ice hockey player and official who played between and among other things 894 games for the Winnipeg Jets , New York Rangers , San Jose Sharks and New York Islanders played in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . Due to a stroke and its consequences, Mullen had to end his career early at the age of 32. His five year older brother Joe Mullen was also a professional ice hockey player and is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame .
Career
Mullen first played in a New York junior league in the late 1970s, before going to the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1980 to 1982 . During this time he played for the U20 national team of the United States in the Junior World Championships in 1980 and 1981 . After the left winger had already been selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the seventh round in the seventh round in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft in 128th position , he moved to the Jets in the National Hockey League for the 1982/83 season .
In his first NHL year, the rookie established himself in the NHL squad and played in all 80 games of the season, in which he was able to collect a total of 50 scorer points. Mullen stayed in Winnipeg until the end of the 1986/87 season , where he had his best NHL year with 71 points in 69 games in the 1984/85 season . In the summer of 1987 he was then transferred to the New York Rangers in his hometown as a package with some draft rights . The American played for another four years as an integral part of the NHL team in the Big Apple and during this time also took part in two senior world championships . Before the 1991/92 season , the Rangers gave Mullen to the newly formed San Jose Sharks .
In his only season there, he turned out to be the team's second-best scorer as one of the few bright spots, but went back to New York after the season, where he played for Rangers rival New York Islanders . Mullen was only able to play for the Islanders for one year, however, as he suffered a stroke on August 8, 1993 while training . This was caused by a thrombus in the brain and meant that he was unable to fully utilize his motor skills for some time. This was followed by a successful open heart surgery which resulted in a quick recovery. However, while training for his comeback in 1994, he suffered an epileptic seizure , after which he had to end his career.
After his career ended, he worked as an official of the National Hockey League for eight years and was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy together with his brother Joe in 1995 for his services to American ice hockey . He is currently a co-commentator for the New York Rangers TV broadcasts .
