Oskar Sundqvist (born March 23, 1994 in Boden ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League since June 2017 . With the team he won the Stanley Cup in the 2019 playoffs .
Career
Oskar Sundqvist played for his hometown club Bodens HF until 2010 . He then switched to the youth department at Skellefteå AIK . After two years in the U18 area, he was selected in the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in 81st place by the Pittsburgh Penguins . Sundqvist initially stayed in Sweden and played his first professional games in the Svenska Hockeyligan in the 2012/13 season . The next year he won the Swedish championship with Skellefteå AIK . In May 2014 he signed an entry level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but stayed in Skellefteå for another year on loan. There Sundqvist and his team narrowly missed defending their title when they lost 4-2 to the Växjö Lakers in the final series. Since the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins were still active in the playoffs of the American Hockey League , Sundqvist could still play one game for the Pittsburgh farm team .
For the 2015/16 season he moved completely to North America and initially played in the AHL. In February 2016, Sundqvist was named to the Pittsburgh Penguins squad and played 18 games by the end of the regular season. He scored his first goal on April 2, 2016 when the New York Islanders were outnumbered . In the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs , Sundqvist was part of the extended NHL squad and came to two missions. With the other players of the extended roster, he was on site at all games and also took part in the victory celebration on the ice after winning the Stanley Cup . However, it was not immortalized on the trophy. The same was true of the Stanley Cup victory the following year, in which the Swede, however, did not book any playoff appearances.
In June 2017, Sundqvist and a first-round vote for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft were given to the St. Louis Blues , who in return sent Ryan Reaves and a second-round vote for the same draft to Pittsburgh.
With the Blues, Sundqvist won the Stanley Cup in the 2019 playoffs . He then received a new four-year contract in St. Louis, which should bring him an average annual salary of $ 2.75 million.
International
Sundqvist played for the Swedish national team at the 2014 U20 World Youth Championship and won the silver medal. At the Euro Hockey Tour 2014/15 he completed his first two senior international matches.
