Alexander "Alex" Steen (born March 1, 1984 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Swedish - Canadian ice hockey player who has played for the St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League since November 2008 . With the team he won the Stanley Cup in the 2019 playoffs . He is the son of former NHL player Thomas Steen , who played for the Winnipeg Jets between 1981 and 1995 .
Career
The 1.85 m tall center began his career at Swedish club Västra Frölunda HC in the Elitserien , before he was selected in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft as 24th in the first round by the Maple Leafs. During the 2004/05 season , the left shooter played for the Swedish first division club MODO Hockey Örnsköldsvik, his first game in the NHL Steen completed on October 5, 2005 against the Ottawa Senators . In addition, Steen was nominated for the YoungStars Game taking place in the framework of the NHL All-Star Game 2007 , where he was in the starting line-up of the Eastern Conference team.
On November 24, 2008 Steen was transferred to the St. Louis Blues along with Carlo Colaiacovo for Lee Stempniak . In July 2010 he signed a four-year contract extension with the Blues. In the following season, the center was appointed assistant captain of the team and closed the season with 20 goals and a new personal best of 51 points.
During the lockout in the 2012/13 season , he returned for 20 games to his former club MODO Hockey in the Elitserien, scoring 23 points. In October 2013, Steen scored 11 goals and a total of 16 points scorer in 10 NHL games, after which he was named NHL Player of the Month . Before the NHL break in February 2014, Steen was sixth on the NHL's top scorer list with 28 goals.
At the 2014 Winter Olympics , Steen was part of the Swedish national team and won the silver medal. In addition, he should be part of the Swedish squad at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , but canceled a month earlier due to an injury.
With the Blues, Steen won the Stanley Cup in the 2019 playoffs . In February 2020, he played his 1,000th regular season game in the NHL.
Steen is an athlete ambassador for the development aid organization Right to Play .
