Carlo Colaiacovo (born January 27, 1983 in Toronto , Ontario ) is an Italian - Canadian ice hockey player who was most recently under contract with the Adler Mannheim in the German Ice Hockey League . His twin brother Paulo was also a hockey player, but in the position of goalkeeper .
Career
Colaiacovo began his career with the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League before he was selected in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft in the first round in 17th position by the Toronto Maple Leafs . He stayed in the OHL with the Otters until 2003 and was able to increase his points yield from year to year. During the 2002/03 season he made his debut for Toronto in the NHL, but returned to the Otters after two NHL games.
From the beginning of the 2003/04 game year , he played mainly for the St. John's Maple Leafs , Toronto's farm team in the American Hockey League , and came only sporadically to appearances in the NHL. In addition, Colaiacovo was repeatedly thrown back in its development by injuries. At the beginning of the 2005/06 season he made it into the NHL roster of the Maple Leafs and scored his first NHL goal against the Washington Capitals on November 8, 2005 . On 23 January 2006 Colaiacovo was in a game against the Ottawa Senators of Václav Varaďa checked so that it headfirst into the boards crashed. The resulting injury meant that he was out the rest of the season.
In the following two seasons he continued to struggle with injuries, but still completed a total of 76 games for the Leafs. During the 2008/09 season , on November 24, 2008, Colaiacovo was given together with Alexander Steen to the St. Louis Blues , who sent Lee Stempniak to the Leafs for it. Colaiacovo played a very good, injury-free season in St. Louis and ended the season with 29 points. This made him the blues defender with the highest points.
In September 2012 Colaiacovo was hired as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings . In July 2013, the Red Wings paid out his contract early ( buy out ). In November 2013, his long-term employer, the St. Louis Blues, signed him again for a year because his defense colleague Jordan Leopold injured his hand and was out for a long time. This contract was not renewed after the 2013/14 season, so Colaiacovo was looking for a new employer as a free agent . He found this in the Philadelphia Flyers in October 2014 . His one-year contract was not extended there after the season, so he joined the Buffalo Sabers , again as a free agent .
After the 2015/16 season, the defender moved to Europe for the first time when he signed a one-year contract with Adlers Mannheim from the DEL in November 2016 . Ultimately, he played for the Adler until the end of the 2017/18 season.
International
For Canada , Colaiacovo took part in the U20 World Junior Championships in 2002 and 2003 . In both years he won the silver medal with the team after defeating Russia in the final . He was also elected to the tournament's all-star team in 2003 and was the top scorer of the world championship together with Patrik Bärtschi , Igor Grigorenko , Yuri Trubachev and Tuomo Ruutu . All had scored ten points each . For the Canadian men's selection, the defender was on the ice for the first time at the 2011 World Cup .
