Václav Varaďa (born April 26, 1976 in Vsetín , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player and current coach . The right winger completed, among other things, over 500 games in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Buffalo Sabers . With the Czech national team he won two gold medals at world championships.

Career

Václav Varaďa began his career as an ice hockey player in the youth division of HC Vítkovice , for whose professional team he made his debut in the last season of the highest Czechoslovak ice hockey division, the 1st league , in the 1992/93 season . In the following season, the attacker scored 15 points in a total of 29 games, whereupon he was selected in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft in 1994 as the 89th player of the San Jose Sharks , for which he never played. Instead, he played one season each in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League for the Tacoma Rockets and their successor team, the Kelowna Rockets . During this period, the San Jose Sharks transferred the Czech to their league rivals Buffalo Sabers , for whom he was on the ice for the first time in the National Hockey League in the 1995/96 season .

For Buffalo Varaďa played in the following eight years regularly in the NHL, where he ran in his first three seasons in the Sabers franchise in parallel for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Rochester Americans . On February 25, 2003, the left shooter was transferred to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for his compatriot Jakub Klepiš along with a five-round vote in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft . With the Senators he immediately reached the final games of the Stanley Cup in the 2002/03 season , in which he and his team were defeated by the New Jersey Devils with just 3: 4 wins. For Ottawa he was active for a total of three and a half years, bridging the lockout during the NHL season 2004/05 at his ex-club HC Vítkovice Steel in the extra league.

In summer 2006 Vara Va signed with HC Davos from the Swiss National League A , with which he first won the Spengler Cup , and then for the first and only time in his career the Swiss championship . Following this success, the winger switched to their league rivals SCL Tigers , for whom he scored a total of 32 scorer points in 37 games. In the 2008/09 season , the two-time world champion was back under contract with HC Vítkovice Steel before he was loaned to HC Kometa Brno in November 2009, after 19 games in the 2009/10 season .

In August 2010 he moved from HC Vítkovice to HC Oceláři Třinec . With this he won the Czech championship title at the end of the 2010/11 season . He ended his active career after the 2013/14 season.

After he switched to the position of assistant coach at HC Oceláři Třinec at the end of his active career, Varaďa took over the Czech junior national team in the 2016/17 season and won the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2016 . For the 2017/18 season, however, he returned to HC Oceláři Třinec, which he now took over as head coach.

International

For the Czech Republic, Varaďa took part in the U20 Junior World Championships in 1995 and 1996 and the World Championships in 2000 and 2005 . In addition, since 2007, since he has been back in Europe, he has been used in international test matches and tournaments on the Euro Hockey Tour .
