Colton Parayko (born May 12, 1993 in St. Albert , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been with the St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League since March 2015 . Before that, he took a rather unusual path for NHL professionals via the Alberta Junior Hockey League and the University of Alaska Fairbanks .
Career
Youth and University
Colton Parayko began playing ice hockey at the age of five and was active in his youth for various junior teams in his hometown of St. Albert. In 2010 he moved to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons in the second-rate Alberta Junior Hockey League ; The defender did not make the leap into one of the three highest Canadian junior leagues and thus took a rather unusual path for later NHL professionals. In his first year with the Oil Barons Parayko completed 42 games and came up with an average of 12 scorer points for a defender , so he was not considered in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft . The following year, however, the Canadian increased significantly, scored 42 points in 53 games and was subsequently selected by the St. Louis Blues in 86th position in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft .
Following a Parayko began studying Business Administration (Business Administration) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and played in parallel for their hockey team, the Alaska Nanook , in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). He spent three years at the university and was elected to the First All-Star Team and Defensive Player of the Year of the WCHA in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons ; He also led the Nanooks as captain in the 2014/15 season .
St. Louis Blues
In March 2015, Parayko signed an entry-level contract with the St. Louis Blues , who handed him over to their farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL), the Chicago Wolves , by the end of the season . There he made his professional debut and scored four goals and three assists in the 17 remaining games of the regular season. As part of the preparation for the 2015/16 season, the Canadian immediately won a regular place in the NHL squad of the Blues and thus made his debut in the National Hockey League on matchday one . In his first season Parayko completed 79 games and led all rookies in the league in the plus / minus rating (+28), so that he was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team . In the subsequent off-season he took part in the World Cup of Hockey 2016 with the North America team, a selection of U23 players from Canada and the USA . After the 2016/17 season, the defender made his international debut for the Canadian national team when he won the silver medal at the 2017 World Cup and was elected to the tournament's All-Star Team .
In July 2017, Parayko signed a new five-year contract with the Blues that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 5.5 million.
