Evgeni Evgenjewitsch Kuznetsov ( Russian Евгений Евгеньевич Кузнецов ; English transcription: Evgeny or Yevgeni Kuznetsov ; born May 19, 1992 in Chelyabinsk ) is a Russian ice hockey player . The center has been under contract in the National Hockey League since 2014 with the Washington Capitals , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs . With the Russian national team he won the gold medal at the World Championships in 2012 and 2014 .

Career

Yevgeny Kuznetsov began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of HK Tractor Chelyabinsk , for whose second team he was active in the Pervaya League , the third Russian division, from 2007 to 2009 . In the 2009-10 season , the attacker made his debut for Traktor's professional team in the Continental Hockey League . He scored three goals in a total of 39 games and provided seven templates. He also scored 19 points scorer in eleven games for Traktor's junior team in the first-ever multinational youth league Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja Liga .

In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft , the Russian junior international was selected by the Washington Capitals as the 26th player in the first round . However, Kuznetsov stayed with his hometown club, for which he scored 32 scorer points in 44 games in the 2010/11 season , including 17 goals, and thus almost tripled his yield compared to the previous year. He also scored seven goals and four assists for Traktor's junior team in the MHL junior league.

In 2014 the Russian moved permanently to the Capitals team, where he made his breakthrough in the 2015/16 season with 77 points in 82 games. In July 2017, he signed a new contract in Washington, which should bring him a total salary of 62.4 million US dollars over the next eight years.

In the 2018 playoffs , Kuznetsov and the Capitals won the first Stanley Cup in franchise history with a 4-1 win over the Vegas Golden Knights . He himself led all players in the playoffs in scorer points (32).

International

For Russia , Kuznetsov took part in the junior division in the U18 Junior World Championships in 2009 and 2010 and the U20 Junior World Championships, U20 Junior World Championships 2010 and U20 Junior World Championships 2011 . He was runner-up with the U18 national team in 2009 and world champion with the U20 national team in 2011. At the U18 World Cup in 2010 and the U20 World Cup in 2011, he was one of the three best players on his team, and in 2011 he was also elected to the All-Star Team of the U20 World Cup. In the senior sector he was in his country's squad for the Euro Hockey Tour in 2011 .

His first participation in a men's world championship followed in 2012 , where he won the gold medal. In 2014 , Kuznetsov was able to repeat this success with the Russian national team. In 2016 , 2017 and 2019 he won the bronze medal in the world championships. In August 2019, Kuznetsov was banned from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) for four years. This affects all competitions it organizes and applies retrospectively from June 2019. As part of a doping control at the 2019 World Cup, he was found to have cocaine , although the suspicion only arose from a video published on the Internet after the World Cup, in which Kuznetsov can be seen at a table with two lines of white powder and a rolled up banknote . He said he had never used drugs and agreed to be reviewed. In contrast to IIHF, cocaine is not classified as a performance-enhancing substance by the NHL. In addition, he was removed from the bronze medal winners list for the 2019 tournament.
