Dustin Ray Byfuglien (born March 27, 1985 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who was last under contract with the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League until April 2020 . Before that, the defender , who began his career as a winger , spent five years with the Chicago Blackhawks , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2010 playoffs .

Career

Dustin Byfuglien began his career as a hockey player in the 2001/02 season with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League . At the beginning of the following season he moved to league rival Prince George Cougars , for whom he played for a total of three years until 2005. During this time, the trained defender was selected during the NHL Entry Draft 2003 by the Chicago Blackhawks in the eighth round as a total of 245 players.

In the summer of 2005 Byfuglien was first included in the squad of the then Chicago farm team , the Norfolk Admirals from the American Hockey League . For the Admirals, the defender played 53 games in his first season in professional ice hockey, in which he scored 23 points, eight of which were goals. In the same season Byfuglien made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Blackhawks and scored five scorer points, including three goals, in 25 games. In the following season Byfuglien was again in both the Admirals and the Blackhawks. In the 2007/08 season he finally fought for a regular place in the NHL squad Chicago, where he benefited from retraining to power forward . In the 2009/10 season he won the Stanley Cup with Chicago .

For the 2010/11 season Byfuglien moved to the Atlanta Thrashers , where he was again used as a defender. After relocating to Winnipeg, after which the Thrashers traded as Winnipeg Jets , Byfuglien acted as assistant captain and continued to serve as both a defender and an attacker. In the service of the Jets, the American developed on his position in defense to one of the best offensive defenders in the league and was mostly good for 40 to 50 scorer points per season.

Before the start of the 2019/20 season, Byfuglien initially withdrew for personal reasons and did not take part in the pre -season training camp. In February 2020 it was announced that he would no longer be used in the season before both parties agreed on an early termination of his contract in April 2020. For the time being it remains unclear whether he will continue his career.

International

At the World Cup of Hockey 2016 Byfuglien made his debut for the US national team , but was eliminated with the team in the group stage. In two tournaments he prepared a goal.
